Markets in Castellón

The first market on our list of mercados in the province of Castellón is Mercado Central in Castelló de la Plana. The biggest market in the city, it is a treasure trove of fresh produce, particularly when it comes to fish, which is sourced directly from the fish market at El Grao. There is also an incredible selection of fresh fruits and vegetables that come straight from local producers. Come along to discover the difference that locally sourced really does make

Castelló de la Plana is also home to a number of other markets that purvey the same high quality local produce. Mercado de San Antonio and Mercado de la Naranja, for instance. The latter is an orange market held in a number of plazas across the city every Sunday, offering you the opportunity to buy the sweet citrus fruit directly from local producers.

Vinaròs is another foodie destination in the province. The town is famed for its superb langoustines, which you can get your hands on at the Mercado Municipal, fresh from the fish market. Fish, seafood, fruits, veggies, freshly baked bread, homemade desserts, sausages and anything else you can think of also await here.

Also worth a mention are Benicarló’s Mercado Central Municipal, a place where foodies can find the finest designation of origin products, such as artichokes, and Burriana’s Mercado Municipal whose stalls sell local products such as coents, a cured sausage that you should always have in your cupboards. You can also get your hands on the finest fresh meat, fish, vegetables and fruit from local producers.

Markets in Valencia

València is one of the destinations with the most markets in the Region of Valencia. The history of each of these is intertwined with that of the district they are located in, creating a space for communities to come together, to chit chat, but also driving the local economy and keeping customs alive. As you wander the streets of the city, you will come across two architecturally impressive indoor markets that are home to all sorts of gourmet wonders: the Mercado de Colón and the Mercado Central.

The Mercado de Colón is a foodie destination offering a number of different spaces where you can sip on a sweet glass of vermouth, enjoy a tasty horchata (a drink made from tiger nuts in Alboraya) and even sit down to a fine meal prepared by excellent chefs. The Mercado Central, on the other hand, is one of the busiest of the 17 municipal markets in the city. The market stocks the freshest produce grown in the huerta, the agricultural land around the city, alongside the finest meats and fish. Take your time to wander around inside, gaze at the beautiful architecture and allow the gourmet delights to awaken your senses.

The different barrios, or districts, of València are also home to some superb markets, such as Mercado de Ruzafa, Mercado del Cabanyal, Mercado Mossèn Sorell, Mercado de Tapinería, Mercado Jesús-Patraix: we could go on. Each and every one of these has a unique and fascinating history connected to their district. But make no mistake: these are not places of the past, they are bustling, alive and growing. Once you’ve spent some time here, you’ll not question us when we say that València is all about gastronomy and quality products.

Cullera is another fantastic gastro destination in the province. The seaside town’s market is situated in the centre and has an important place in locals’ hearts. Housed in four separate pavilions, the market offers two restaurant areas and two traditional market spaces. A place where you can really dig in to the finest locally sourced fresh ingredients.

Markets in Alicante

The province of Alicante is home to a myriad of destinations with great grocery markets and fish markets selling the freshest Mediterranean products.

If you are looking to get some fresh fish, there is no better place than the fish market. Here you can watch the fishermen sell their catch to local restaurants and other companies. The fish and seafood are caught using both traditional methods and trawling. Some of the finest fish markets in the province are in Calp, El Campello, Jávea, Santa Pola and Villajoyosa

And then there are all the markets in the Costa Blanca, from Abastos de Torrevieja’s Mercado Municipal and Abastos de Elche’s Mercado Central to Jávea’s Mercado Municipal and, of course, Alicante’s Mercado Central. The latter is a place where beautiful architecture blends with a great variety of local produce, including gourmet delicacies. During your visit to the market you can even sit down to a delicious aperitivo, made with the finest local produce. You won’t regret it.
