Take a look around a destination topped with an impressive castle where ancient civilisations built incredible monuments that are still standing today. Start planning your trip and get ready to be amazed.

Located in El Camp de Morvedre in the province of Valencia, Sagunto is still defined by the grandeur that it reached in the Roman period. The magnificent archaeological sites and monuments here will blow you away. Come to step back in time and discover civilisation after civilisation, and the impressive legacy each left behind.

What to see in Sagunto

We’re going to start our explorations in Villa de Sagunto, the historic centre, where you’ll find yourself wandering down charming streets. Before you know it, you’ll be standing in front of countless points of interest like the Town Hall and Plaza Mayor, soaking up the lively atmosphere that always fills the square. Make sure you visit Vía del Pòrtic, also known as Domus dels Peixos, an archaeological site where an old Roman road and house from the same period were discovered.

The old Jewish district is another must-visit. Look out for the arch marking its entrance and note that the streets still trace the original layout. You’ll get some incredible photos. Here you can visit Sagunto Archaeological Museum, which has a fantastic collection.

We’d also recommend stopping off at Casa dels Berenguer where you can get all the tourist information you need and see the ruins of a mikveh, a ritual bath used in Judaism, the wall of Diana Temple and the megalithic remains of Sagrario street.

La Santísima Sangre Chapel, La Natividad de Nuestra Señora Parish Church and El Salvador Parish Church are some of the most important religious buildings in Sagunto so make sure you stop by for a visit. The centre is also sprinkled with many chapels: perhaps you could see them all one by one? To discover the traditions and culture characterising Sagunto’s festivals, make sure you stop off at the Collection of La Confraria de la Puríssima Sang del Nostre Senyor Jesucrist, which houses an interesting collection about Holy Week

And now the time has come to climb up to Sagunto Castle. This magnificent Al-Andalus fortress dates back to the 11th century, though it was constructed on the ruins of civilisations that came before them. It’s well worth dedicating some time to take a look around. The Roman Theatre is another of Sagunto’s great sights. Though it was built in the 1st century AD, performances are still held here today. The cultural programme always has something interesting going on.

Sagunto has a district lining the coast where we’d recommend taking a stroll along the beach and visiting heritage sites like El Grau Vell Fort or Tower, a defensive site overlooking the Mediterranean. As you can see, there’s plenty of monuments and sights to see in Sagunto: make it your next destination and get ready to soak up some culture.
