Atzeneta d’Albaida is a small village in inland province of Valencia, which is known locally as El Mirador del Valle, the viewing point over the valley, thanks to the stunning vistas it affords. The pretty little village is enveloped in a beautiful landscape of limestone mountains and pine woods, offering stunning views whichever way you look.

What to see in Atzeneta d’Albaida

One of the main reasons to visit Atzeneta d’Albaida are the beautiful landscapes. The village is swept up in an area of natural beauty that breathes total peace and quiet.

Solana de Benicadell is nearby, a protected mountainscape that is defined by its sharp ascents. This is a hiking lover’s paradise. If you manage to scramble all the way up to the top, you will be awarded with boundless views over the entire county.

Another fantastic walk is Ruta del Agua. This water walk will lead you to the source of Acequia del Port and a number of other interesting local sights connected to water.

In the village itself, there are a number of interesting buildings and monuments. San Juan Bautista church is a case in point. Dating back to the 18th century, the church was built to replace the Moorish place of worship which was constructed in the 16th century.

Also worth a visit is El Santísimo Cristo de la Fe y del Monte Calvario chapel, a place of worship that is close to local peoples’ hearts. The Stations of the Cross leading to the chapel form the backdrop to an important event in the village’s festivities: the moving of the sculpture of Christ. Interestingly, the sculpture of Christ is named ‘El Morenet’ in Atzeneta d’Albaida, referring to its colour. Legend has it that the statue was rescued from fire; rather than being totally burnt, the wood had turned a darker shade.

Nevera de Dalt and Nevera de Baix are two of the oldest sights in the village. These ice houses are cylindrical stone structures topped with domes that were used to collect snow in the winter, transform it into ice and then use it for various purposes throughout the year.

After all this exploring, you’re sure to have worked up an appetite. Atzeneta d’Albaida, like everywhere in the Region of Valencia, boasts a fine gastronomy. Make sure you find the time to sit down to enjoy specialities such as cassola al forn and arroz caldoso. If you’ve got a sweet tooth, you’re going to love monas and platanets, small cakes shaped like bananas. Absolutely delicious.
