Cabanes is a Mediterranean destination that is longing to be explored. Sitting in the province of Castellón, the town boasts a great historic and artistic heritage, naturescapes that draw you in and wild beaches where tranquillity reigns. Come along to enjoy countless experiences that will make you fall deeper and deeper in love with this corner of the Region of Valencia.

What to do in Cabanes

As you stroll in and around Cabanes, you will encounter historic monuments and buildings, treasures that speak of the destination’s long past. The sights and findings here date back to the Iberian, Roman and Muslim periods.

One of the town’s points of interest is the Arco Romano, which is one of the most important archaeological sites in the Region of Valencia. Built in the 2nd century BC, its precise purpose remains unknown, although it is largely believed that it was a private funerary monument.

The municipality’s castles will also capture your attention. Castillo de Albalat was constructed in the late 13th century by the bishops of Tortosa with the intention of repopulating the area. At its feet sits another historic building: Ermita Fortificada de Albalat.

Not far away, in the north of the municipality, is a second fortress. Castillo de Miravet dates back to the Muslim period, though it was later conquered by El Cid in the year 1090. Perched atop a hill, it affords expansive views over the local scenery.

The historic centre, meanwhile, is filled with nods to the town’s past. Palacio Municipal, the council, is an interesting architectural building. Built in the 15th century, it is defined by its arch which stretches over San Mateo street, and windows detailed with trefoil arches. Following its bombardment during the Spanish Civil War, the building was carefully restored to preserve its original Gothic style.

As you continue your exploration of the centre, you will come across the artistry of different styles and periods in buildings such as San Juan Bautista parish church with its colossal Baroque façade.

Outside the town lie spectacular landscapes, including one of the most pristine wetlands in the Region of Valencia. El Prat Cabanes-Torreblanca is an extraordinary area of natural beauty that is absolutely worth a visit. You will find a number of endemic species here, such as the peacock mantis shrimp, Spanish toothcarp and Valencia toothcarp. And if you love birdlife, the natural park is nothing short of a paradise. Get out your binoculars to watch nature in motion and capture it all on camera.

Serra de les Santes is a wonderful place to take a hike. This picturesque valley is home to Les Santes chapel, which is dedicated to the town’s patron saint, Ntra. Sra. del Buen Suceso, better known as Mare de Déu de les Santes.

If you’re looking for a place to rest and unwind, Cabanes’ beaches are ideal. Torre de la Sal beach is lined with eucalyptus woodland and expands in sand and pebbles towards the blue seas of the Mediterranean. El Quartell Vell is another impressive beach. Thoroughly wild, this nudist beach is close to El Prat de Cabanes-Torreblanca natural park. An idyll where you can breathe in the tranquillity and feel the sea breeze on your skin.

Cabanes is a destination with plenty to offer. Explore each and every corner, immerse yourself in its rich history and chat with the locals to create memories you will never forget.
