This year's Festival Serenates is due to run from 24 June to 4 July and is organised jointly by Universitat de València and the Music Section of CulturArts Generalitat. The festival started in the 1980s with the idea of using the cloister of Centre Cultural La Nau as a setting for offering Valencia audiences a summer music festival, and this year's programme features some exciting new events.

The two first performances (on Monday 24 and Tuesday 25) are of the ballet The Rite of Spring by Igor Stravinsky, celebrating its centenary year in 2013. On Thursday 27 June, singer-songwriter Maria del Mar Bonet will be giving a one-off concert in which she will perform her album Fira encesa, featuring a selection of poems by Bartomeu Rosselló-Porce set to music.

On Friday 28 June, it's the turn of the group Capella de Ministrers, led by Carles Magraner and performing Amores e cansó, a tour of songs played by wandering minstrels in the Kingdom of Aragón during the 12th and 13th centuries.

On Saturday 29 June, the Universitat de València Philarmonic Orchestra will be playing chamber music conducted by Hilari Garcia. On Sunday 30 June, the Orfeón Universitario de Valencia choir, conducted by Francesc Valldecabres, will be presenting a concert of choral music sung a capella, with a varied programme ranging from 16th century polyphony through to music from the modern era.

On Monday 1 July, soprano Erika Escribá Astaburuaga and pianist Carlos Apellániz will be performing an opera recital featuring music dating from the 17th to the 19th centuries. On Wednesday 3 July, you can see Grupo Instrumental, conducted by Joan Cerveró and performing Minimal & theater music.

Thursday 4 July is the closing day of the Festival, with a performance by the Generalitat Valenciana Choir, conducted by Francesc Perales. The choir, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, will perform a programme of a capella music entitled De Viena hacia Occidente.
