Annual festivals, traditions and folklore provide a wealth of attractions from north to south along the Costa Blanca during July, with a huge variety of spectacular and colourful events. From Torrevieja's annual festivities featuring the International Habaneras and Polyphony Competition, to the Ciutat d'Elx Guitar Festival and Living Chess in Xàbia. This summer, there's always something to celebrate on the Costa Blanca calendar. Come and join in the festivities!

The 59th International Habaneras and Polyphony Competition, held from 22 to 28 July in Eras de la Sal, is the biggest competition of its kind in Spain and attracts the genre's best choral groups from all over the world.

The event is held in honour of seafarers from Torrevieja, in Alicante, who would make voyages to trade with Cuba, where these popular melodies originally came from. Since 1955, this Mediterranean town has been hosting the competition and serving as a meeting place for people from different countries across the world who sing these charming songs.

Meanwhile, from 26 July to 1 August, Elx will be hosting the 15th Ciutat d'Elx Guitar Festival. The concerts will be held in the San José Cloister and in the main courtyard of Palacio de Altamira, and will be featuring a performance by the winner of the Ciutat d'Elx 2012 Prize, Rubén Bettencourt. You can check the times and locations of concerts here.

On Saturday 27 July at 10:30 pm, Xàbia's harbour esplanade will be the setting for the 17th Xàbia Living Chess tournament, declared of National Tourist Interest. This event is a wonderful opportunity for exploring Xàbia, cooling down in the crystal clear waters along its beaches and  - why not? - for savouring one of the local delicious rice, fish or shellfish dishes.
