Titaguas’ La Mojiganga is cultural heritage that is very much alive. Explore the history of the dance and its unique meaning.

Listed Cultural Heritage in 2019, Titaguas' La Mojiganga is an age-old dance that is a quintessential part of the history of this part of the province of Valencia. Every seven years, as part of the Fiestas Gordas festivities, the dance comes to life in a unique cultural performance.

La Mojiganga is divided into two parts: a religious part and a profane part. The former includes performances entitled El Altar Mayor, El Altar Movible, Las Andas, La Eme and El Pilón. The latter represents the various agricultural and fishing activities in the area, namely Los Oficios, El Batán and El Baile del Garrote, all accompanied by traditional music.

The 32 dancers wear traditional clothing that the old farmworkers would have worn in the summer: zaragüelles (baggy trousers), a red sash, a white shirt, a velvet waistcoat and a headband tied on the left-hand side. The white and black high socks and laces combined with the master of the dance’s cape and hat complete this distinctive look.

The next performance of this unique dance is scheduled for September 2023. The locals are looking forward to the event with excitement and pride. Titaguas’ La Mojiganga is a Valencian cultural treasure that is worth celebrating and conserving for future generations. Watch the dancers and discover the ritual in what is both a window onto the past and an expression of Titaguas’ identity.
