What to see in Fageca

The Alfaro and La Serrella mountains shelter Fageca, a pretty little place enveloped in olive and almond groves. This is the ideal place to roam the mountains, following spectacular trails through the limestone landscape. In the village itself, we’d recommend popping your head into the 16th century church and wandering around the plaza.

As you explore the streets, you’ll enjoy the sight of houses nestled into the mountain. Once out into the wilderness, you can walk trails and explore heritage sites such as La Salema, a small cave and archaeological site where the remains of animals have been found as well as what is known as the Fageca petroglyph, an outdoor engraving in the rock.

Lime kilns, dry stone shepherds’ shelters such as El Sester, the ruins of Xeroles castle and ice houses form the local landscape, which is well worth exploring with some mintxos – a local dish – in your backpack. The unique formations of the limestone mountains will blow you away.

After all that exploring, you’re sure to have worked up an appetite. Sit down to a bowl of potaje or olleta, dishes that are particularly tasty in Fageca. If you can, coincide your visit with the fourth Sunday in August to take part in La Mare de Deu del Dolors i l’Esperit Sant festivities. So what are you waiting for? Start planning your country getaway to Fageca, a destination that will win your heart from the moment you arrive.
