Festivities on Moixent

Moixent holds the most varied fiestas throughout the whole year, like the Carnestoltes(Carnival) with a cavalcade through the streets of the town, Holy Week (Easter), with processions in which different brotherhoods join in, that consider Easter an epilogue, when the people go up to El Bosquet to eat longaniza and the mona. The fiestas of 29th June are in honour of Sant Pere (Saint Peter), who gives his name to the parish. The fiestas of the street of Raval are very popular and are celebrated during the first week of August, with young bulls, a verbena (an open-air celebration held on the eve of a saint's day) and popular suppers. During the last fortnight of August, first of all the great traditional fiesta in the Casa Rabosa is held, in honour of Abdón and Senent, on the Saturday there are young bulls and a verbena and on the Sunday there is a Solemn Mass. Then following straight after these fiestas the patron saint feast days are celebrated, in honour of Santísimo Cristo del Calvario and the Santas Reliquias, in which the street bullfighting shows (bulls with their horns tipped with wooden balls, young bulls etc.) are combined with musical evenings, regional dances, fireworks displays, masses and processions and sporting competitions. The most moving events are the entrances and the presentations of the Queens of the Fiestas. Lastly, during the Christmas celebrations the Misa del Gallo (Midnight Mass), Nochevieja (New Year's Eve) and the Cabalgata de Reyes (Three Wise Men Cavalcade) are to be highlighted. Amongst the youngest, the tradition is still upheld in which they go from door to door asking for a Christmas treat by singing Christmas carols.
