Since 1637, every 17th of May the town celebrates de day of San Pascual Bailón. Thousands of pilgrims from the province of Alicante and the surrounding areas (Murcia, Valencia and Albacete) travel to Monforte del Cid to visit the cave of San Pascual and leave votive offering in order to thank the saint’s favors. It’s one of the most importatnt pilgrimages in Valencia Region due to the number of believers who are completely devoted to this saint.

At the same time, it is also possible to visit the church of Nuestra Señora del Orito in the homonymous municipal district and to visit the fair, which is organized some days before and some days after the celebration itself.

Every year Monforte del Cid welcomes the month of May with one of the most popular histories and traditions in the province of Alicante. The festivities of La Romería and San Pascual Bailón take place in Orito during almost the whole month of May and has been celebrated since 1637. The procession of San Pascual welcomes over 250.000 visitors during the month of May, being the 17th of May the day with a higher affluence, moment when the festivity of San Pascual is celebrated. It is indeed one of the most important pilgrimages in Valencia Region. We should point out the beauty of the circuit, which ends on top of the mountains of Sierra de las Águilas, in the cave of San Pascual, where the saint remains protected. According to tradition, pilgrims must touch the cord of San Pascual. On the other side, the traditional Fair of San Pascual offers traditional souvenirs from San Pascual, as well as wicker baskets or kitchen equipment among other products. The fair in Orito remains open during the whole month of May.
