The tradition tells that the Patron Saint, in 1538 interceded on behalf of the town and avoided a pirate invasion, and that in1653, the effigy of the Santa cried when Felipe IV authorised the construction of a reservoir, to water the dry lands of Villajoyosa. The town now pays homage to its Patron through a solemn religious procession, in which the effigy of the Santa is carried from the Church around the streets of the Old Quarter. Finally, the assistants sound the Gozos to Santa Marta as an act of faith to the Virgin. The festivities also commemorate the foundation of the city.
