Rei Pàixaro, in honour of San Antonio Abad

Biar pays homage to San Antonio Abad, the patron saint of the animals on the weekend the Festival of San Antonio Abad is held. The origin of this festivity goes back to the Middle Ages. According to recent studies it was originally a pagan festival depicting the moment when the Moriscos, before they were expulsed from Biar, paid taxes on their agricultural goods. The festivity mixes animal blessings and the veneration of Rei Pàixaro, an odd member of the royal court, who even upstages the patron saint. This unusual king has journeyed through time to the present because of a close link with this Catholic rite.
