LA ENRAMÁ FESTIVITIES

LA ENRAMÁ FESTIVITIES

The "Enramá" tradition commemorates the arrival of spring. This is probably the most traditional and rooted festival in Chulilla and one of the largest in the county of Los Serranos. It is held in May and Easter. Although all the inhabitants of the town are involved, the main roles are played by the foremen and workers, boys and girls between 17 and 22 years, who accompany the flower carriers, aged between four and eight years. They are responsible for organizing the festival among all.

The festival begins on the day of San Vicente Ferrer and continues until the first weekend of May, the moment itself when the "Enramà" takes place. During this period, every Friday and Saturday night, a popular instrument called "snail" is played through different streets of the town, announcing that the party is nigh.

The events of the first May weekend are:

Saturday

-"Enramá" (on Saturday morning), the foremen, accompanied by their Clubs, head to the riverbanks where they cut branches of poplar. The branches are loaded onto horse-drawn carts and transported to town. Due to their size, the journey and the entrance to town turns into a spectacular event.

-The "Grupas" (Saturday afternoon). Pilgrimage to the Virgin on horseback, running through the old district of Chulilla. The participants are dressed in local costumes.

- "Jota" dance At the end of the "Grupas", the "Jota" is danced.

-The "Mayos". They are songs in prose, wryly describing the main events of the year. This event takes place by midnight at the church doors.

Sunday

- The chicken In this event, young men compete among them by rising human towers and trying to reach for products of the earth hanging from a rope held by the foremen themselves. At different times of the festival, foremen and workers provide all the people and visitors a wide pastry and wines tasting of products typical of Chulilla.

The "Enramá" is the oldest party in living memory and has been passed down generation after generation. It is a festival for young people but enjoyed by the whole town. The festival is organized by the foremen and workers. The foremen are four kids aged between 17 and 22 years old. The workers are two girls aged alike and there are also at the two "florericas" (little flowers), which are two girls aged between four and seven years old, participating in the festival.

The party truly begins on the Monday in honour of San Vicente Ferrer, its climax being the first weekend of May. The day of San Vicente, to new foremen and workers are chosen. In the afternoon, in the church square, both the incoming and outgoing foremen dance the "jota". From here until the first weekend of May, Friday and Saturday nights, the foremen and friends go around the village playing "caracoles", standing at strategic points (the Peñeta and Mirador) which makes it heard throughout the village.

The first Saturday of the month, in the morning, the "Enramá" enters the town. It is made of poplar branches, cut by the foremen and friends. The entrance is spectacular as it is done with horses, an animal essential at this event. Saturday afternoons the Grupas is celebrated, a pilgrimage on horseback in honor of the Virgin which runs through the most winding streets. At night the "Mayos" are signed, a song in prose of all that has happened in Chulilla during the year. After the singing of the Mayos, foremen offer to all the people and visitors a taste of pastries typical from the village, accompanied by mellow wine and sweet wine.

On Sunday afternoon, foremen to be and friends of the current foremen make human towers, with the aim of reaching a ham and a bread roll. This act is known as the "Pollo" (chicken), because years ago a chicken was hung. There are countless stories about the fight for it. Once this event is finished, the workers offer "reguiño" and chocolate for all the people and visitors.

Foremen and workers have one year ahead to continue enjoying the festivla, because this ends just at Easter, when the foremen and workers have an important role in the Eucharistic celebrations, ending on the day of San Vicente Ferrer.
