Exceptional witnesses to how the city has developed, these two towers were, in mediaeval times, the main entrance to the walled city for travellers from Catalunya and Aragón as well as for those people coming from the hill-country to the north. Although characteristically defensive, this did not prevent a rich and elaborate process of ornamentation being applied to them, such that they have a certain air of the triumphal arch. The Serrano Towers have been used over the centuries as a prison and as a hiding-place in which to store works of art during the Spanish Civil War. There are two towers, polygonal in shape, united by a central body several storeys high. The view of the city obtained from the very top is really magnificent.
