The Fine Art of Silk College and its Garden

Colegio_Mayor_Seda_Vlc_Img11.jpg

Valencia's textile tradition, imported with the immigration of craftsmen from Genova, involved the creation of a silk workers' guild by those dedicated to this craft. It was established in a fine town house from XV century. Up to 3800 weavers employed in the silk industry were concentrated in the Barrio de Velluters, a name still used today. The building has a Baroque main entrance and a stone-decorated façade in which can be made out the cardinal's cape of San Jerónimo, the patron saint of the college. On each side is a wrought-iron balcony, the base of which is tiled, and inside the building is an XVIII century work in tiles symbolizing fame; this is a gesture of admiration for Valencian silk.
