Img 1: MARÍA CRISTINA BRIDGE

Constructed between 1828 and 1838, it is the first great public work that was carried out in Alcoy, which meant an improvement in communications. The bridge was named María Cristina (in homage to María Cristina Borbón Dos Sicilias, the fourth wife of the King Fernando VII). The bridge is of mediaeval style and combines the employment of course stone and fine limestone ashlars. Its maximum height is of 27 metres over the riverbed of the River Riquer, at the point where the exit of the Tints (Dyeworks) begins.
