The Castle of Santa Bárbara

The summit and part of the hillside of the Monte Benacantil are the site of a huge fortress that possesses three different defensive rings. The highest one is where the oldest remains are, including Iberian, Roman and Moorish. The middle one houses an outer ring of buildings from the XVI century, whilst within the lowest walls is to be found the "Revellín del Bon Repós" and the monument to Félix Berenguer de Marquina of Alicante, military commander of the Phillipines and Viceroy of New Mexico. The most outstanding rock formation is known as the "Moor's face" and is a symbol of the city.
