Discover a little slice of hiking paradise in the heart of Serra de la Calderona. Serra is a destination you’ll come back to time and time again.

Sitting in the heart of Serra Calderona natural park, Serra is a mecca for hikers. The area is crisscrossed with short and long trails that will lead you through incredible scenery peppered with viewing points, springs and the most unexpected monuments. Keep reading to discover everything you need to know before you start planning your getaway.

What to do in Serra

The Castillo is a good place to start your explorations. The circular trail to the castle and back is 7km long and will treat you to impressive vistas. The castle was built between the 8th and 9th centuries and its great tower and crenellated curtain wall are still standing today.

Defence towers are scattered across Serra, both in the centre, namely the 9th century Islamic Torre del Senyor, and outside the town, such as Torre de la Ermita, Torre de Ria and Torre de Satareña.

Serra also has a large number of fountains, starting with Salud in the centre, and continuing with Deula, Potrillos, Sant Josep, Sant Antoni, El Marianet, L’Ombria, El Llentiscle, El Poll, El Berro, El Marge and La Gota. As you can see, the list goes on and on. Many of these fountains are located in recreational areas where you can have something to drink and rest for a little while.

Another of Serra’s great attractions are its viewing points, called miradores in Spain, such as El Garbí, which affords extraordinary vistas over the inland area of La Calderona. You’ll be blown away by the bird’s-eye views of the mountains and the coast

We’d also highly recommend making your way to Cartuja de Portaceli, a Carthusian monastery with a 15th century Gothic aqueduct sitting in the midst of orange groves in a beautiful valley. Though the monastery is not open to visitors, it’s a wonderful place to take a walk and enjoy the panoramic views.

You can also visit Museo del Aceite, the olive oil museum, or take one of the many guided tours and living history tours that will give you an insight into Serra’s heritage. And then there’s Fira de la Calderona-Dia de la Cirera, a cherry festival taking place in early June, the perfect opportunity to dig into a dish of olla con calabaza (pumpkin stew) and try orelletes, a traditional sweet treat. How about it? You ready to start planning your getaway?
