Discover a small destination in the province of Valencia where you can explore age-old sites and take walks in spectacular scenery.

Gátova is one of a collection of destinations nestled in Sierra Calderona natural park. This small village is the perfect place to explore the scenery straddling the borders of the provinces of Valencia and Castellón and an ideal destination for a country getaway.

What to see in Gátova

The verdant landscapes enveloping Gátova are sprinkled with traditional and historic buildings. You will find no lack of structures used for agricultural purposes, such as cisterns, animal pens and even windmills. There are also plenty of fountains whose quality waters will quench your thirst during a day out roaming the mountains.

A wonderful thing to do in Gátova is to visit the fountains. Fuente del Vallejo, fuente del Tormo, fuente de la Ceja and fuente de Iranzo are all just a stone’s throw from the village, making them accessible to all levels of walker. You also won’t want to miss Piñel aqueduct and the bridge.

Next on your to visit El Torrejón, an archaeological site dating back to the Iberian period. Here you can visit a small section of the over 3000m2 site, taking a look at the large rectangular tower. At a later date, the Iberians inhabited the settlement, building La Mina, a necropolis that you can still see today.

In the village itself, make sure you pop your head into the Ntra. Sra de los Ángeles church, which used to be the epicentre of the village’s social life. Gátova also organises a number of festivals and events throughout the year. You won’t want to miss the patron saint festival in September, Fiesta de las mozas y la de los mozos in August and Fiesta de San Antón in January, a festival dedicated to pets and animals full of street parties and bonfires

Try the mushrooms when they’re in season as well as the delicious olive oil, honey and sausages. Gátova is an excellent choice for a country escape.
