What to do Algemesí

Algemesí is embraced by both Llacuna del Samaruc, which is part of L’Albufera natural park, and La Xopera. In the former, you can enjoy spending time in the park’s reserve, spotting ducks, frogs, dragon flies and all sorts of birds. You will be immersed in a landscape of aquatic plants and you might just be lucky enough to spot a samaruc, or Valencia toothcarp, a small fish that is endemic to L’Albufera.

Algemesí has a long list of historic and cultural heritage sites for you to visit and explore. San Jaime basilica, a National Artistic and Historic Monument, is an impressive architectural site comprising a number of different places of worship.

You’ll also want to see Casa Convento de la Señora Pepa and the “pouet” or well at Mare de Déu. Capilla de la Troballa, which is built on an old chapel, is the site the image of Mare de Déu de la Salut – the focus of the town’s biggest festival – was found.

Algemesí’s intangible heritage will captivate you throughout your visit. Fiesta de la Mare de Déu de la Salut is a medieval extravaganza featuring dance, music, costumes, performances and oral narration that bring together the traditions of Jewish, Muslim, Christian and Roman culture.

The festival takes place on the 7 and 8 September. One of the highlights is La Muixeranga, an exciting event in which colourful human towers are built to the beat of music. If you can’t make it to the town for the dates of the festival, you can always visit Museu Valencià de la Festa, the festival museum, where you can learn about everything that goes on as part of the festivities. So what are you waiting for? Now you’ve got all the information you need, it’s time to start planning your getaway to Algemesí.
