What to see in Jijona

The best place to start your tour is Castillo de Jijona, also known as Torre Grossa. Sitting on the highest point in the town, this imposing fortress dates all the way back to the Almohad period and was built between the late 12th and early 13th centuries. It is a large construction that extends along almost the whole of the hilltop where it perches. 

The castle is not the only sight to explore. The streets of Jijona are populated with a number of points of interest, such as Nuestra Señora de la Asunción archpriest church. This Renaissance church was built between the late 16th and early 17th centuries, though the altarpiece was renovated in the 18th century as it was destroyed by fire. One of the building’s defining elements is the stone bell tower that has a unique green and white tiled roof. 

The next stop on your tour of the town’s churches is Santa María. Legend has it that James I of Aragon ordered the church to be built: the relief decorating the tympanum depicts the Virgin Mary flanked by the King. 

Another architecturally interesting sight is Horno del Raval. Dating all the way back to Moorish times, it is one of the most historic communal ovens in the Region of Valencia. And it still works to this day with some of the finest local pastries being baked here. Make sure you have a try during your time in the town. 

Staying on the topic of food, Jijona is a destination that is renowned for its cuisine, particularly its sweet treats. Turrón or nougat is the star of the show. Once you’ve finished looking at the exhibitions, you will take a look around the nougat factory. 

Located in inland province of Alicante, Jijona is nestled in the most spectacular landscapes. If you love walking, you will adore the hiking routes here. One will take you up the peak of El Migjorn, a difficult route that will take you up some 800m. The effort will absolutely be worth it though as the vistas from here are breathtaking. Alternatively, you can explore the Cabeçó d’Or, one of the best known mountains in Alicante. This route will take you through Jijona, Relleu and Busot, leading you to historic caves, such as Cuevas de Canelobre.
