Come and visit Villena, a town with a lot of history and monuments that you won’t want to miss. Come for a getaway and fall in love with the local heritage, festivals and gastronomy.

Bursting with treasures and home to one of the most impressive castles in the province of Alicante, Villena is a destination that you’ll want to take your time to explore. Fancy coming to take a look around?

What to see in Villena

La Atalaya Castle, also known as Los Pacheco Castle, is an Arabic fortress that perches over the centre, granting strategic views. The castle has two sets of curtain walls as well as examples of inscriptions dating back to the Muslim period. We’d recommend taking a guided tour of the site.

Another point of interest that is well worth visiting is Villena Museum, where you can see what has been dubbed the Treasure of Villena. Dating back some 3,000 years to the Bronze Age, this collection comprises items of gold, silver, iron and amber. The museum also houses the treasure found at the Cabezo Redondo archaeological site, a settlement that you should take a look around.

Then you can take a stroll around the historic centre, stopping off to visit Plaza Mayor and the fountain, or taking a route that will lead you to the Art Nouveau sights. Make sure you save some time to see Santiago Apóstol Parish Church, the Town Hall or Municipal Palace, Santa María Parish Church and the Bullring.

You should also visit Villena’s Festero Museum where you can learn everything you want to know about the Moors and Christians tradition and keep an eye out for the summer festivals that fill Villena with great bands and solo artists. Remember that you’re in a great winemaking region and to visit the Antonio Navarro Santafé Museum.

Outside the centre sits Nuestra Señora de las Virtudes Sanctuary and, if you’re in the mood for getting active in the great outdoors, you’ll be pleased to hear that Villena has some incredible nature areas. If you’re keen to plan a cycling getaway, you can follow some of the local bicycle touring routes. So what are you waiting for? Come to Villena to discover a destination with plenty to get up to.
