Located in La Marina Alta in the province of Alicante, Ondara is one of those places that take you aback time and time again. Start planning a getaway to see all of its historical sites and discover a place that will remain etched on your memory for years to come.
What to see in Ondara
During your explorations of Ondara centre, make sure you don’t miss the Clock Tower, which is the only part of the old castle that is still standing. The Islamic fortress once dominated the town: in the present-day head to Plaza del Mercado to see the bell tower and clock. Another fascinating building that is well worth seeing is Fuerte House, also known as El Mayorazgo House, which sits on the corner of Dénia and Sol streets.
Not far away is Santa Ana Parish Church, an 18th century place of worship, and Mínimos Convent, which is now the Town Hall. Then there’s the Bullring, which is where lots of local festivals and events take place. All of these sights will get you reaching for your camera. You’ll also want to stop off at the old Llavador, a public wash house that is a reminder of what life was like in yesteryear.
In the outskirts of Ondara, there’s a leafy botanic garden and a number of weirs named El Assut de l’Alberca and El Assut del Molí Nou, both of which date back to the 18th century. These cool places are teeming with life and well worth a visit.
Not far from Ondara you’ll find historically important archaeological sites as well as caves, namely Colom Cave, El Corb Cave and Fosca Cave, from the palaeolithic and neolithic periods. The remains of Pla de la Font, Pujades i Vinyals, are Roman. Most of the findings discovered at the latter are now housed at Dénia’s Archaeological Museum. So how about it?
