Come and visit a pretty little village situated in the Pop valley that has more than a few surprises up its sleeves. Discover more.

Located in the province of Alicante, Murla sits in the beautiful Pop valley. This charming village is a wonderful place to start all sorts of lovely hiking trails. Shall we take a look around?

What to do in Murla

Start your exploration by wandering the narrow streets of central Murla, a destination sitting on the foothills of a mountain with a lot of history to its name, as it was the final Moorish stronghold in the Region. It’s a peaceful place when you can’t help but feel yourself unwind.

Before too long you will find yourself looking at the church-cum-fortress, which was built by the Moors on Roman remains and dedicated to San Miguel Arcángel. The construction has thick stone walls and is a treat to photograph. In the 16th century it was frequently attacked by pirates.

Another sight you won’t want to miss is the old turret, located next to the wash house, which is still in use today. You should also make a point to visit La Sangre and San Sebastián chapels during your time in Murla. The latter is thought to be the most historic in the Region of Valencia, dating to the 14th century.

La Sangre chapel has a lot of history behind it, as it was built as a hospice and was later a prison. Another interesting fact about Murla is that it’s got a strong connection to pilota valenciana (a racket sport) and the local festivities are packed with demonstrations, championships and matches that you won’t want to miss.

Fiestas Mayores takes place in August, San Miguel is celebrated in September and Fiestas de San Sebastián is held in January. If you’re spending some time in the destination, make sure you visit a local bakery to try coca de la Marina, a sort of pizza filled with delights such as sobrasada and veggies.

Last but by no means least, Murla is an excellent mountain biking and hiking destination. We’d recommend making your way up Penyó Roig. So come for a getaway and explore this fascinating village.
