Located in La Marina Alta in the province of Alicante, La Vall d’Alcalà is the perfect destination for anyone that loves rural and nature tourism. This is the place to enjoy trails, scenery and plenty of history. Keep reading to discover the destination’s most picturesque spots and the sights you won’t want to miss. It’s time to start planning your trip.

What to see in La Vall d’Alcalà

La Vall d’Alcalà has two centres – Alcalà de la Jovada and Beniaia – which sit in a landscape scattered with the ruins of Moorish settlements like Benialí, La Cairola, La Roca and L’Atzuvieta. This region of mountains and valleys has been inhabited for centuries. In times past, it comprised other centres, namely Criola, Benixarco and La Adsubia.

We’d recommend visiting La Purísima Concepción Parish Church in La Vall d’Alcalà and La Purísima Concepción Parish Church in Beniaia and wandering the peaceful streets, which is always a lovely way to spend time. In the centre of Alcalà de la Jovada, you can also see the ruins of La Vall d’Alcalà Castle.

La Vall d’Alcalà is embraced by the Geographical Indication for the cherries growing in Alicante’s mountains. In early spring and late winter, the scenery here completely transforms with the fruit and bloom on the cherry trees, which will be of particular interest to hikers and photographers. And if you’re in the area in cherry season, you simply have to gorge on the fruits from the valley.

In terms of the trails in La Vall d’Alcalà, we’d recommend setting off on an exploration of the area’s uninhabited centres and Moorish settlements. You’re sure to enjoy everything you’ll see. And then, of course, you could head to Penya La Foradà (also known as Peña Horadada) and Baix and Dalt ice houses.

Alternatively, you could travel even further back in time, to prehistory, along trails that will lead you to Tossal de la Roca, El Condoig rock shelters and the old Saltes ruins. So how about it? Fancy coming to explore this beautiful valley on an exploration of ancient civilisations and the old Muslim caudillo led by Al-Azraq? Come and fall in love with La Vall d’Alcalà
