The Region of Valencia has a seemingly endless treasure trove of charming places to visit. Places detached from the hustle and bustle of modern life where you can escape for a day to spend quality time with your family, friends or partner and discover an authentic slice of Valencia. Biar is one of these places.
Located in the inland province of Alicante and perched 650m above sea level, Biar was on the traditional route from Castilla to the Mediterranean Sea; a fact that has shaped the history of its population and customs.
What to do in Biar
The first monument you’ll notice in Biar is its imposing Arab castle built in the 12th century. Dominating the skyline of the village, the castle affords spectacular panoramic views over the remains of the town walls, Medieval towers and historic centre. A place you’ll want to take your time over to soak up all the history and beauty around you.
You can enjoy another extraordinary panoramic view from Acueducto Ojival, a 70m-long aqueduct dating back to 1490. The waterway was used to carry irrigation water and aimed to save the Rambla dels Molins from overflooding.
Another of the draws of the municipality is Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Gracia. Also known as Santuario de Biar, this incredible building is nestled in one of the most beautiful settings in the county, in the heart of Sierra Fontanella.
Plaza de la Constitución houses the beautiful Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, a church dating back to the 15th century that is defined by its plateresque door, baroque belltower and churrigueresque communion chapel.
Come to Biar and take a step back in time as you breathe in incredible views, discover historic monuments and visit beautiful churches. One of the most extraordinary places in the Region of Valencia.
