What to see in Benilloba

If you fancy doing some hiking, you’re in luck. Benilloba has a number of wonderful trails for you to explore. You could, for instance, head in the direction of Barranc de Cuixot where you will find an old flour mill and an aqueduct built in 1794. Another option is to visit Salt de Benilloba, a lovely waterfall set in the most beautiful scenery, or the old hydroelectric station of the same name. No matter which trail you choose, you will come across mills sitting next to the river and old washhouses. Cavers will also be pleased to know that there are also beautiful subterranean limestone caves in the area.

Back in the village, your eyes will be drawn to the ceramics decorating the streets. These works of art are altars dedicated to the saint the street is named after. You’ll also want to take a look at Natividad de Nuestra Señora de Benilloba, a 17th century Neoclassical church.

Like countless destinations in the Region of Valencia, Benilloba hosts a number of festivals throughout the year. The village celebrates San Vicente on the 3 October, holds a traditional market on Good Friday and puts on a spectacle for Moors and Christians, in honour of San Joaquín and Santa Ana, in August. Danzas Típicas is also worth a mention, which is held in honour of Madre de Dios in September. The festivity is organised by the local 18-year-olds, known as mayorales, and sees the streets filled with the sight of traditional dress and the sound of the dulzaina.

If you love trying local cuisine during your holidays, make sure you try pericana, a cod and pepper spread, and olleta, a tasty stew made with pulses and sausages. Start planning your getaway to Benilloba today to enjoy a couple of days in the country.
