Located in inland province of Castellón, Viver is a great destination for hiking and cultural getaways. Keep reading to discover some of the wonders that await in the village and then plan a trip to come and see them for yourself.
What to do in Viver
There are so many things to get up to in Viver that you are sure to find the perfect plan to satisfy your craving for culture and adventure during your family or friends getaway. One example is to walk one of the Rutas por el Frente de Viver (Trails along the Viver Front) where you can see bunkers and trenches from the Spanish Civil War.
Alternatively, you can explore the streets of Viver, making sure to stop off at Plaza Mayor, Virgen de Gracia Parish Church, which is built on an old mosque, Santa Bárbara Chapel and Los Huertos Gate, which will give you a glimpse into what Viver looked like in medieval times.
San Francisco de Padua Parish Church is a much-loved place by the locals. Next door, you will find an old convent that has been converted into a cultural centre, which also houses the Visitor Centre for the Levante Offensive, known by the acronym CIBAL. The exhibition is well worth a visit. Finally, in the centre, we recommend setting off in search of the old wineries, which you can see on the street.
If you’re keen to explore some nature during your getaway, you will be pleased to hear that Viver has some lovely scenery. Make your way to La Floresta Park with its waterfalls, ferns and caves for a wonderful day out with the kids. Sitting on the banks of the river Palancia is El Sargal, a natural area which makes a great place for a walk and picnic. It also has some caves, namely El Sargal Cave, which was used as a shelter during the Paleolithic period.
Other excellent excursions in Viver will take you to La Torre, an old defence structure, San Miguel Spring and San Roque Chapel, which has some lovely views. You also won’t want to miss the remains of an old Roman villa and Ojos Negros Greenway. Last but by no means least, walk the Ruta de Paisajes del Agua, the Water Trail, which will take you on an exploration of natural springs and hydraulic infrastructure both inside and out the municipality. Come and fall in love with Viver.
