Vistabella del Maestrat

Sitting in the spectacular scenery of Penyagolosa natural park, Vistabella del Maestrat is a beautiful village that is well worth spending time exploring. Put it on your to-visit list for inland Region of Valencia. 

What to see in Vistabella del Maestrat

This medieval village is still noticeably so as you wander around its pretty streets. Before too long you will come across the old town walls, the turrets and even two gates - named Sant Roc and El Forn - which used to provide access to the village. Make time to marvel at the Gothic architecture of Loreto Church, the Romanesque façade of the cemetery and, most importantly, the Renaissance beauty of La Asunción parish Church. 

Dating back to the 17th century, this place of worship is recognised as the most important example of Renaissance architecture in the province of Castellón. Make sure you don’t miss it. The Palacio, located next to the medieval prison, is another Renaissance building. The elegant chapels and rooms are well worth taking a look around. 

If you fancy venturing outside the village, we’d recommend heading to El Calvario Chapel to take some beautiful pictures of Vistabella del Maestrat and the surrounding scenery. The area is a walker’s paradise. Penyagolosa is an area of extraordinary beauty populated with all sorts of wildlife which, on clear days, will take you aback by just how far you can see. 

The village is the trailhead to plenty of walks that will lead you to veteran trees, native varieties and a whole lot of woodland. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, sit down to enjoy some of Vistabella del Maestrat’s local delicacies and products. Mushrooms, pataca de Vistabella, tortilla d’arròs, sausages and savoury tarts such as coc de sal i oli are all on the menu. For dessert, you can enjoy cuajada and some traditional sweet treats. Come and visit this historic village and discover one of the Region of Valencia’s most iconic mountains.
