What to see in Sierra Engarcerán

A good place to start your explorations of Sierra Engarcerán is Palacio Casalduch, a handsome example of civil Gothic architecture that currently houses the local council. From here, you can continue through the historic centre to San Bartolomé, a Baroque church, and to the many museums that are well worth taking a look around. And then there is the Moorish castle that perches on the highest point of the village.

Located just outside the village is San Miguel, a 17th century chapel, and historic constructions like Nevera de la Sierra, an ice house that is in excellent condition, as well as countless lime kilns, which are scattered throughout the municipality area. Another point of interest is Destilería de Espliego, a lavender distillation plant.

Rock climbers will be pleased to hear that there are plenty of great rockfaces in Sierra Engarcerán, specifically in La Guitarra gorge where you can also see the cave art that has been listed a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. There are also via ferratas where you can experience the thrill of the mountain.

Further must-visits in the municipality are Tosal de la Vila, an archaeological site with remains dating to the Bronze and Iron Ages, Cueva Santa - a spectacular cave that is home to a native arthropod - and a Portuguese oak that was catalogued by the botanist Cavanilles in the 18th century. As you can see, there’s so much heritage in Sierra Engarcerán that you’ll have to visit more than once.
