What to see in Portell de Morella

The simple act of wandering the streets of Portell de Morella will transport you back to times past, thanks to the white and stone façades coupled with the traditional tiled roofs. The small centre is home to the ruins of Portell de Morella Castle, a medieval fortress built for defence purposes. The structure of the castle has become integrated into the urban landscape.

The castle tower is the present-day bell tower of La Asunción de Nuestra Señora Parish Church, which dates back to the 17th century. A section of the curtain walls comprising a number of towers and even a gate is still standing. Within the site of Portell de Morella Castle, there is also a plaza known as “el Corro”.

Additionally, you can visit 16th century Renaissance Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza Chapel, which sits close to a wash house. Just outside Portell de Morella there is another place of worship, San Marcos Chapel, which is located in the nature area that goes by the name of Las Albaredas. Built in the 15th century, the charming chapel is swept up in the embrace of mother nature. It’s just an easy, and beautiful, walk from the centre.

Countless archaeological sites have been discovered in Portell de Morella. For instance, you could walk to En Balaguer, which has information panels. Other sites to add to your list are: Pallaresa, Mas de la Rambla (also known as Nàssio), Mas de Palma, Mas de Valentí and Tossal de la Barcella.

And there’s still more to do in Portell de Morella. We’ve left one of the most spectacular sights until last: Rambla Celumbres Municipal Natural Landscape where you can find a number of the aforementioned archaeological sites and incredible rock formations that are a joy to explore.
