Sitting on the banks of the river Palancia is a small municipality with plenty of things to see and do. Come and explore Geldo.

Located in Alto Palancia in the province of Castellón and just a stone’s throw from Segorbe, Geldo is a small village sitting on the banks of the river Palancia. The destination is nestled between Sierra de Espadán and Sierra Calderona natural parks and has plenty of culture and nature to enjoy. Shall we take a look around?

What to do in Geldo

If you enjoy soaking up culture during your getaways, Geldo won’t disappoint. The centre of the village is a fascinating outdoor art gallery filled with the work of street, graffiti and mural artists who decorated the walls and façades of the village on the occasion of ImaginArte, an art festival.

This means that a simple walk through the streets of Geldo becomes an artistic experience that is sure to get the emotions going. Make sure you also stop off at Nuestra Señora de la Misericordia Parish Church, the 17th-century Baroque place of worship which has lovely interiors, as well as Geldo Castle Palace whose foundations are even older.

Dating from the 14th century, the Palace is an important example of Gothic architecture in the region. The interior cladding and windows are original and it contains priceless heritage pieces. It has been employed for both public and private uses. From Roman amphoras to Islamic towers, the patio is truly beautiful.

If you are keen to take a walk, a lovely route is to follow the river through the Fuente del Cristo where you’ll come across a playground, a traditional wash house and one of the original religious ceramic tiles. Before too long you’ll reach Fuente de San Gil next to river Palancia which has picnic areas and an outdoor gym. Both spots are great places to spend time with the family.

Geldo also hosts all sorts of festivities. Held during the second two weeks of August, cultural week has a programme full of events and activities for all ages as well as a procession with torches made from melons. San Antonio is celebrated in January and Virgen del Rosario is celebrated in October complete with verbena del mantón, an event in which the locals dance wearing a traditional scarf. So what are you waiting for? Come to Geldo and fall in love with its streets.
