Located in Baix Maestrat, Càlig is a picturesque village enveloped in the most spectacular landscapes that are calling out to be explored.

Càlig is an excellent destination for hiking, caving and generally getting out and about in the great outdoors. A pretty little place where you can escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy the fresh air.

What to see in Càlig

A good place to start your exploration of Càlig is in the village itself. Here you can visit San Lorenzo church, which was built in the 14th century in the Renaissance style. Another must-visit is Torre de Càlig, a tower built for defence purposes. It is the oldest building in the village and currently houses Casa de la Cultura. You also won’t want to miss Neoclassical Virgen del Socorro chapel, which was rebuilt in the 18th century, and the picturesque Carrer del Pont.

Around the village, you will come across another type of construction that dates all the way back to Neolithic times: shelters built using the dry stone technique, an art form protected by UNESCO. The buildings were used to provide refuge to shepherds, farmers and walkers. Casetes de la Volta del Terme is an excellent example of this type of structure.

Càlig is an excellent walking destination with trails snaking La Tossa mountain and Rocas d'en Xiller. The peaks of La Tossa afford spectacular views that on clear days extend to as far as the Ebro delta and Columbretes Islands. In the rainy season, Rocas d'en Xiller is home to all sorts of waterfalls, the course of water carving out the most spectacular shapes in the rock.

The area also boasts plenty of great caving spots. Sima de Epifanio, for instance, as well as Sima de la Rambla, Sima de la Tossa and Sima del coll de les Forques. An incredible opportunity to explore what lies beneath the surface of the earth. And before you leave, we’d also recommend exploring Barranco de Aiguaoliva, an area populated with Valencian oak, tree heather, strawberry trees and more.
