Plan a getaway to this corner of the world for an eye-opening experience tracing the historic remains of civilisations that have left their mark on the streets and landscape. Get the diary out and start planning your trip.

What to do in Borriol

Let’s start our trip to Borriol by meandering around the old streets of the historic centre. You’ll notice the 15th century La Vila House straight away, now home to the Borriol History Museum (MUHBO). The museum displays significant Roman remains that reveal Borriol’s past as a notable destination on the legendary Vía Augusta.

Next on the tour is 16th-century San Bartolomé Apóstol parish church, its ornate Baroque design is a real sight to behold. Just around the corner are the remains of the old city wall, which still possess an air of prestige.  You can’t not love Borriol’s winding cobbled streets and the unique atmosphere that bounces off every wall.

Continuing your tour around Borriol will take you to the Remolins Viewing Point, which provides a sweeping view of Borriol and its surroundings. Take some photos of the scenery, the vista dotted with traditional dry-stone buildings. Right in front, you’ll come across the fantastic castle. The remains of this Mediaeval fortress are perched precariously on a huge rock, and at its feet you’ll find the Morería, an old Moorish site.

Another must-see on your trip around Borriol is El Calvario Chapel, a quaint little church that sits at the end of a winding uphill path. If that’s not enough religious architecture for you, then visit the 17th-century San Vicente Ferrer Chapel, less than two kilometres from the centre.

In addition to the many hiking trails there are to explore, taking you past old giant stone ovens, another good outdoor activity is to venture along the Joquera route. This circular path takes you past ancient cave paintings, Iberian and Argaric settlements and a large number of traditional buildings such as old water wheels, mills and ponds. And don’t forget to pack your golf clubs when visiting Borriol, as there’s a great golf course, perfect for letting off some steam on your time off.
