Come and explore a small destination in El Alto Palancia that is positively bursting with the charm of the villages of the inland. You’re going to love Benafer.

Benafer is a destination in inland province of Castellón defined by the traditional charm of narrow streets and stone façades. Come and enjoy a day of nature and rural tourism in this destination, and remember to bring what you’ll need to do some hiking

What to see in Benafer

A good place to start your exploration is by wandering around the village, stopping by the plaza where you will see the Ayuntamiento, the 17th century parish church, a fountain and two old wash houses that you will love photographing. The church has been fully restored as Benafer was badly affected by the Spanish Civil War. El Sagrario chapel is the only part of the 17th century building that is still standing.

There are all sorts of attractions in the area surrounding Benafer, such as the beautiful landscapes of Cueva de la Cerdaña, a huge cave filled with stalactites and stalagmites that cavers and hikers will love exploring.

You can also climb up some peaks, like that of Monte Peñáguila, or set off in search of springs like Fuensanta, Tercio and Fandangueda. Los Nogales Fountain has an excellent recreational area where you can enjoy a picnic in the shade of the trees. There’s also a children’s play park and an area where you can light fires.

Another point of interest is the Ermita de San Roque, which affords incredible vistas. You also won’t want to miss the walk to El Castillejo, an Iberian site. The walk is signposted and along the way you’ll enjoy soaking up the landscapes and the biodiversity. And then when you get there, visiting the remains of an ancient settlement.

After all this walking, you are sure to be in the mood for a big bowl of olla de Benafer (a sort of stew) followed by something sweet like bollas or rollos de trilla. It’s time to start planning your getaway to this lovely place.
