What to see in Alfondeguilla

Alfondeguilla has got no shortage of walking trails. One option, starting in the village, is to walk to some of the many sources situated in gorges teeming with plants and animals. Examples include La Penyeta, El Gos, El Flare, La Figuera, Cabanelles, Marc and more.

Alternatively you could climb up to the Pipa and Nevera peaks or visit the old lime kilns. Scattered throughout the landscape are examples of dry stone architecture, such as cattle pens like La Paridera.

Don’t miss the opportunity to follow a trail flanked with cork and pine trees to Castro castle and explore Nevera de Castro, an ice house where snow used to be kept. Not far from the castle, the remains of an old settlement have been found. Another great hiking trail in Alfondeguilla is that to the cinnabar mines, which are connected to the kilns where the mineral was burnt to make mercury.

Throughout the year, Alfondeguilla hosts all sorts of festivals and festivities. In November, there is the patron saints festival in honour of San Bartolomé and San Francisco Javier and the Calvario procession, which always has a good turnout. In August, it’s Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, where the street parties will get you dancing away, and during Holy Week there is an enactment of the Passion. In terms of local delicacies, make sure you try fogassetas. So what are you waiting for? Start planning your trip to this pretty little village today.
