The castle stands on a hill overlooking the church of the same name. The fortress was built by the Bishops of Tortosa in the late 13th century, probably to encourage the repopulation of the area. Especially interesting is the southern part of the castle with its double wall. The inside of the castle is better preserved than the outside and there is a tower and crenellated battlements to the north. The castle is built from dressed stone with masonry corners. The castle was abandoned in the early 16th century, at the same time as the neighbouring Miravet Castle.
