El Tossal de La Cala in Benidorm is an incredible archaeological site. Though perhaps best-known for its great beaches and lively atmosphere, Benidorm is also steeped in history. A dig was conducted in the 1940s at the part of El Tossal de La Cala known as the "castellum", which revealed the remains of a fort dating to between the 2nd and 1st centuries BC.

These Roman remains were once a defence construction that served as shelter for a group of soldiers. This military structure was strategically located to monitor the arrivals of ships from the sea. Ruins of rooms and walls have been found at El Tossal de La Cala as well as materials that have helped historians and archaeologists identify the site as an encampment of the army of Quintus Sertorius, a notable Roman leader.
