The natural park of Puebla de San Miguel

The natural park of Puebla de San Miguel comprises 6390 hectares, an area which is entirely to be found within the municipal district of Puebla de San Miguel, a town located in the Valencian district of Rincón de Ademuz. We are talking about a mountainous, wild and rough territory that makes up one of the most beautiful landscapes in the Region of Valencia. The Alto de las Barracas, set in the Valencian Javalambre, is the highest point in the Region of Valencia with a height of 1839 metres. The Natural Park occupies an important part of the Place of Community Interest (LIC) "Puebla de San Miguel". To be highlighted from amongst the vegetation of the spot is the presence of monumental examples of the Thuriferous Juniper (Juniperus thurifera), of an age superior to one thousand five hundred years, situated in the microreserve of Las Blancas. Another important species in Puebla de San Miguel is the yew which makes up one of the most important tree populations in the Region of Valencia. The pine is also very much present in the area, especially the Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis), the maritime pine (Pinus pinaster), the Austrian pine (Pinus nigra) and, from 1400 metres in altitude upwards, the Scots pine (Pinus silvestris). Likewise one has to highlight the presence of the Holm oak (Quercus rotundifolia) in specific areas of the natural park, which shares the habitat with other Mediterranean mountain species such as the kermes oak (Quercus coccifera), Spanish gorse (Genista hispanica) or rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis). Together with these species appear endemic species such as thyme (Teucrium Capitatum), the wild service-tree (Sorbus Torminalis), the buckthorn and Solomon's seal. As regards the fauna, the birds of prey are one of the best represented groups with species such as the booted eagle (Hieratus pennatus), the short-toed eagle (Circaetus gallicus), the kite (Milvus migrans), the golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) and the owl (Tyto alba). Amongst the reptiles one can highlight the presence of snakes and eyed lizards (Lacerta lepida) and amongst the mammals, the Hispanic goat coming from other surrounding territories, the badger (Meles meles), marten (Martes foina), the wild boar (Sus scrofa) and the mountain cat (Felys sylvestris).
