2016 International Tourism Day, for sustainable and accessible tourism
Publishing date 15/09/2016
On the 27th of September 2016 International Tourism Day is celebrated under the theme 'Tourism for everyone! to promote universal accessibility.’
At some point in our lives, we will all need touristic facilities to be accessible to visit them. This highlights a right: the right of all citizens to know the diversity of our planet, its wonders, its teachings. That is why the World Tourism Organization (OMT), an agency of the UN, has chosen the slogan 'Tourism for everyone! Promote universal accessibility' to celebrate the 2016 International Tourism Day.
The Valencian Government, through the Touristic Info Network has organized an extensive program of activities in different municipalities of the Valencia Region to celebrate World Tourism Day. In addition, it is supporting and promoting the importance of accessible tourism, among other actions, with the collaboration of the blog 'unlimited Travelers' which presents touristic destinations and companies around the world to spread their beauty and accessibility.
The next September 27th will be held, as every year, this event which offers us "the potential of tourism to contribute in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (ODS)," said United Nations on its website.
Accessible tourism is another step in this struggle and aims to raise awareness in creating environments thinking about the needs of people affected by a disability, families traveling with small children, the elderly, and so on. "On World Tourism Day this year, we ask your help to spread the message of the importance of universal accessibility and the immense benefits that can report to society as a whole", he claims the international organization.
