Publishing date 1/07/2013
The Peñíscola International Jazz Festival has reached its tenth year with a brand new programme and the same great quality music as always. From 4 to 26 July, Peñíscola is the setting for some great jazz played by four acclaimed artists: Carmen Lundy, Chucho Valdés, Bill Evans and Benny Golson, who will be taking to the stage at 11pm every Friday throughout July at the Palau de Congresos. Plus, there will be four free concerts in the "Jazz a la Serena" programme on Thursdays at 11pm and three in the Mandarina Jazz Club series of concerts on Saturdays at 8pm.
All this makes for a busy few weeks that include other exciting events such as the Jazz Street Marching Band parades and the exhibition Areosoul. De la calle a la galería, by Chile Graffiti in the Hall of the Palau de Congresos. A new addition to this year's festival is the bus service running between Castellón and Peñíscola every Friday in July, stopping at Benicàssim and Oropesa. The price of a ticket is 15 euros.
You can also make the most of this fantastic chance to explore Peñíscola, a noble town packed with tortuously steep, narrow streets that gradually wind round the old quarter before eventually reaching the castle, the "Castillo de Papa Luna".
When you finally reach the top, to the north, the huge beach stretches out beneath you with the fertile plain behind it, and to the south you can see the foothills of the Sierra de Irta mountain range. This area of unspoilt natural beauty cuts across the horizontal line of sandy beaches of the nearby towns, giving way to rugged cliffs and pretty coves, some of which are barely accessible.
Come to Peñíscola and enjoy the best of modern jazz!
