What are Biosphere Reserves? They are areas composed of terrestrial, marine and coastal ecosystems where solutions are fostered to reconcile the conservation of biodiversity with its sustainable use, economic development, research and education. Currently, Spain is the first country in the world with the most significant number of Biosphere Reserves.

The Biosphere Reserve of the Alto Turia (Region of Valencia and Castilla - La Mancha). This section includes eight Valencian areas: Aras de los Olmos, Benagéber, Casas Altas, Casas Bajas, Chelva, Titaguas and Tuéjar. 67,080 hectares that cover part of the middle course of the Turia River, an area characterized by the diversity of its soils and vegetation, as well as the warmth and dryness of its summer climate. Here predominate pines, oaks and junipers. Its fauna is notable for steppe birds, Iberian hares, European rabbits, aquatic blackbirds and midwife toads, as well as two endemic species of freshwater fish, the red-backed barb and the Mediterranean hornbill.

The Valley of Cabriel Biosphere Reserve (Region of Valencia, Castilla - La Mancha and Aragón). This valley, located in the Cabriel river basin, includes the four Valencian towns of Villagordo del Cabriel, Venta del Moro, Requena and Caudete de las Fuentes. Its 421.765,93 hectares offer great diversity of landscapes: mountains, rock formations, river channels, marshes and lagoons.
